Switzerland is one of my favorite countries as a landscape and traveling photographer. Last year I was able to travel around the country in autumn, which is my favorite and most photogenic season.

When I was putting together my itinerary for the Swiss Autumn, I took into consideration that the peak color of the foliage depends on the local vegetation, the altitude, and the location.

#5 Turqoise Glacier Water, Val D’herens

You should be prepared for cold weather, even though autumn is generally a good time to visit the mountains. For my autumn trip to Switzerland, I made sure to pack enough warm clothes and waterproof raincoats.

Every region has its own unique beauty. The rugged and secluded Val d’Herens valleys, in the canton Valais, were my favorites. The Engadin is probably the best place to photograph golden larch. The Jungfrau region’s morning walk between Wengen and Lauterbrunnen was a real dream come true. The ridge hike from Fronalpstock was also a dream come true. The Muotathal, and the rolling hills in Hirzel are lesser known areas.

#10 Magical Encounter With Two Curious Chamoix In The Forest

On a rainy afternoon, I decided to ride the ferry around Lake Lucerne. I met a couple of elderly locals who told me romantic and nice stories about their life in the mountains as children. The conversation was captivating and the perfect way to spend a day.

#13 The Bernina Express In Autumn, A Swiss Icon

Autumn is the best time to visit Switzerland! There are fewer people in many places compared to high season, and the weather is usually sunny after a cold night. This is ideal for hiking. You’ll be surprised if you include less-known destinations on your itinerary.
