The cold yellow and blue sun creates a delicate landscape. Kilian Schonberger is the photographer we’ve been waiting to interview for a long time. Amazing Photographer from Germany, who made a smooth transition from amateur to professional photographer. In this beautiful space he shares some of his photography ideas, inspirations, post processing techniques and tips that aspirants should follow.

What I find most impressive about his photographs is the wide-openness and calmness of nature. The point of view he takes in many of these photos is commanding, and elevates his photography to a new level.

The Photographer is now in charge.

Please introduce yourself.

Hello, my name is Kilian and I am a landscape photographer of 29 years from Cologne/Germany. Here, it’s Photokina time.

What inspired you to take landscape photographs?

I have always been interested in history, landscapes and nature. Also, I enjoyed old stories and legends. During my university years, I began taking more ambitious photos. Since I studied Geography, there was always an interesting subject to talk about because of the field courses that took me to Egypt and Iceland.

What was the moment when you decided to become a photographer?

It wasn’t a single moment, but rather “a fluid passage” from amateur level to professional. I knew photography was a professional field. There were other options as well. What could be better than earning a living doing what you enjoy?

Does there exist a Kilian Schonberger style?

You may notice a “thumbprint”. It is possible that, because I cut my own way through the thickets in the photo industry, I have developed a particular way of seeing the world and expressing it through my photographs. It’s possible that my color blindness has influenced me. The outsider’s view is what determines whether a photographer has a particular style. So I might have to ask: Is there an Kilian Schonberger style?

How will you prepare for a shooting?

Sleep is always a challenge for me. Sleep is never enough for me, since I have to get up early in order to arrive at the location an hour before sunrise. Naturally, I also check maps, books, and the weather forecast for the location where I intend to shoot.

What kind of camera, lens and lighting equipment do use?

Since a few months, I also use a Sony A7R. I have used a Canon 5D MKII since many years. Canon’s 24-mm TSE II is my favorite lens. I also love the lightweight 70-200 4.0L mountain tele, and the 17mm TSE. The sun is my primary light source. Or just daylight, since I prefer shooting in dull and dark conditions.

Please share with us your post-processing image process.

My post-processing is not magic. There are many free video tutorials that can be far more effective than written instructions. Remember to always shoot with “post-processing in mind” – this means that you should be aware of the type of photo base needed for the best results after post processing and take those shots, not just your best OOC shot.

What has been the most flattering compliment you have received? Please share your “happiest moment in photography”

It’s always nice when people compare my photos with Caspar D. Friedrichs artwork. I find him to be a huge inspiration. These quiet mornings in the mountains always bring me great joy. All the moments that are special and touch your soul. Of course, winning a contract is also a happy experience. Landscape photography requires more than just wandering in the wilderness. There’s also a lot to do behind the desk, in terms of communication and networking.

What photographers have you been inspired by?

Right now Otto Olaf Becker.

What is your favourite photography quote?

It’s not really about photography but “A rolling Stone gathers no Moss”

What are your future goals?

The “Kilian Schonberger Style” is further developed.

What final words or advice would you like to share with our readers?

Your photos will be more spectacular the further you drive from the parking lot.
