These images show the traditional Kaalapootu, or Bull Surfing, which is held in North Kerala villages. The race is held in August, during the harvest season. It lasts between noon and dusk. These events are known as “Maramadi” in southern Kerala. Even though the events are held on water-filled paddy fields following harvest, many Panchayaths or private individuals have specially maintained fields for this event.
Kaalapootu, or the celebration of the villager is called Kaalapootu. The villagers gather in great numbers to celebrate the event. Kaalapootu is also a celebration that celebrates the bond between man, animal, and nature. The fertile mud is combined with water, the men, and the bulls to create a beautiful symphony. The “arpuvilikal”, or acclamation, creates an atmosphere of excitement and fervor. It is the dreams and longings of the farmers that resonate in the air. In the atmosphere of a tranquil, simple village, we witness the natural and spontaneous ushering of a new year. The overwhelming energy and enthusiasm of this event symbolizes the indomitable spirit among the villager.
Bulls that are bought at high prices are fed, trained, and groomed specifically for this race. Some bulls are provided with air conditioned bedrooms and receive regular ayurvedic treatments and special diet. In Malayalam, bull guides are known as “pooters”. Half-naked “Pooters”, who hang on to the animal’s tail or harness and skim the mud, are also called “Pooters”. The “pooters” are physically fit, professional and well-trained. They start training at a young age.
Images shared were from an event called Kaalpootu held in Penumanna near Kozhikode. These events, according to the organizers, will bring villagers closer together and encourage young people to continue the tradition.
